Dr Mqolomba currently serves as National Commissioner and Deputy Chairperson of the Public Service Commission of South Africa, having been appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. In this role, she contributes to strengthening public administration, governance oversight, ethical leadership, and institutional accountability within the South African public service. She was recently appointed by the Acting Minister of Police, Minister Cachalia, as Deputy Chairperson of the Police Advisory Panel, a strategic reform structure established to support the envisioned National Police Board under South Africa’s National Development Plan. Her appointment reflects national recognition of her expertise in governance reform, institutional accountability, and public sector transformation.
Her professional career has been deeply rooted in public sector governance, policy development, research, institutional reform, and anti-corruption advocacy. She has developed extensive expertise in addressing governance failures, maladministration, corruption, and institutional inefficiencies, while championing ethical leadership, accountability systems, and professionalization within the public sector. Her governance and policy work has positioned her as a respected voice in conversations around state capacity, democratic governance, institutional reform, and public accountability across Africa.
Dr Mqolomba is also widely recognised for her contribution to leadership development and governance training across the continent. As an Adjunct Faculty Member and Member of the Panel of Experts at Chandler Governance in Singapore, she has facilitated executive leadership and governance training programmes focusing on ethics, anti-corruption, accountability cultures, transformative leadership, and professional public administration. She has delivered governance and public sector leadership training in countries including South Africa, Tanzania, and Kenya, contributing to strengthening institutional leadership and governance capacity across the continent.
Academically, Dr Mqolomba recently completed a PhD in Development Studies at the University of Mpumalanga. She also holds two Master’s degrees, including a Master of Social Science specialising in Sociology and Public Policy, as well as a Master of Arts in Poverty and Development from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. In addition, she completed executive leadership programmes at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, further strengthening her expertise in public leadership, governance innovation, and institutional transformation.
Her distinguished leadership and contribution to public service have earned her numerous international, continental, and national awards and fellowships. These include the Mail & Guardian Power of Women Award (2025), Africa Youth Awards (2021), Africa 35.35 Leadership Award for Public Service (2020), and the Distinguished Humphrey Leadership Award from the United States in recognition of her contribution to public policy and governance reform. She is also a two-time recipient of the Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans recognition. Her global fellowships and leadership affiliations include the Obama Fellowship, Mandela Washington Fellowship, Mo Ibrahim Fellowship, Yenching Fellowship, Chevening Scholarship, Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, AIG Fellowship, CODESRIA Fellowship, and several other prestigious international leadership programmes.
In addition to her public sector and governance work, Dr Mqolomba has contributed to academic and intellectual discourse through research and publishing. She is co-editor of the book Chasing Freedom: Histories, Analyses and Voices of Student Activism in South Africa, reflecting her engagement with issues of democracy, youth activism, transformation, and social justice within South Africa’s evolving political landscape.
